Coming to Stockholm, you might already have knowledge that the city is built on water and has an amazing archipelago to explore. You may also know of ABBA, Spotify, Volvo, and IKEA. But do you know where to eat good food? There are plenty of restaurants and bars around the city and many of them keep a good standard, foodwise. Others don’t. And then there are some places that are just spectacular eating experiences. This is a light and not very complete guide to where you might find those special dining places and in no particular order. They are all just very good.
Fotografiska
The tagline “Sustainable pleasure” is very Fotografiska and their food. Here, the restaurant tries to avoid throwing away any food. The food is plant-based and you can choose if you want to add animal protein to your dishes. The chefs try to use as much as possible of all the things that come into the kitchen. And they do it well. If it’s not good as is, they will process it in different ways until they find a way to use it. Creative cooking at its best. And the view is just spectacular.
Woodstockholm
With a menu that features dishes like Truman Capote, Douglas Adams, and Sylvia Plath, it may feel like a strange menu but it is not. Woodstockholm has just had a bit of fun with the names of the dishes and don’t worry, the staff will explain the connections when they serve the food. This Michelin-star restaurant is an absolute must when you come to Stockholm. A bit on the pricier side but well worth it for the experience.
Tennstopet
This is an old establishment, that’s been operating for well over a century, in Stockholm. Here you find really rustic Swedish food. A must is the S.O.S (Smör Ost Sill= Butter, Cheese, Heering). Other than the S.O.S, just enjoy whatever you’d like on the menu, it’s equally good. This is an insight into how Swedes looked at dining out around the turn of the last century. Enjoy the history, food, atmosphere, and good conversation
Sturehof
If you enjoy seafood, this is the place. They are the masters of seafood in Stockholm. Located at one of the nightlife hubs, Stureplan, there are always lots and lots of people to watch, amazing food to eat and they also have a pretty impressive wine list.
Oaxen Krog & Slip
This two-star Michelin has set itself up for success all the way. The menu is innovative, the chefs are well known, its location is amazing and service is just wow. At Oaxen, you will have an experience like nowhere else. With a menu that is constantly changing, depending on the season and what they have in stock, the only constant is that you will have an outstanding dining experience here. Oaxen is divided into two different parts, Krog and Slip, so you can come back multiple times and discover new things in just a few days.
Garlic & Shots
It’s crowded, it’s loud, it’s garlic-y. It’s fantastic! This is another institution in Stockholm. Former Bröderna Olsson is now Garlic & Shots. Portions are massive, flavorful, and eye-pleasing. Unless you’re allergic to garlic, this is well worth a visit. But beware, if you are looking for a slow and not too loud place, this might be a challenge.
