Yes, I know, I usually write about Linux and open source, but someone emailed me and asked about a bug in Windows, that I’ve heard about several times so I took to google to see if there were more commonly known bugs in Windows 11 that annoyed the shit out of people and here are the top five of bugs people get on a newly installed Win11 system, and (hopefully) how to fix them.
Windows 11, the latest version of Microsoft’s operating system, has brought a number of improvements and new features to the table. However, like any software, it’s not perfect, and some bugs have been reported.
You might need the command prompt for some of these issues and while there are several ways to access that, I prefer to just use the Windows key + R and type ”cmd” and hit Enter from the box that appears.
Wi-Fi connectivity issues
One of the most common bugs reported by Windows 11 users is Wi-Fi connectivity issues. Users have reported that their Wi-Fi is slow, unstable, or disconnects frequently. To fix this issue, try the following:
Make sure your Wi-Fi drivers are up to date. You can check this in Device Manager.
Reset your Wi-Fi adapter. Go to Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi and click on the ”Network Reset” button.
Disable IPv6. Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings > Right-click on your Wi-Fi adapter > Properties > Uncheck the box next to ”Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)”.
Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)
The infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) has been around for a long time, and it’s still causing problems for Windows 11 users. If you’re experiencing a BSOD, try the following:
Update your drivers. Go to Device Manager, right-click on the device that’s causing the problem, and select ”Update Driver”.
Use System File Checker. Open a Command Prompt as Administrator and type ”sfc /scannow”. This will check for any corrupt system files and repair them.
Run a memory diagnostic. Go to Start > Windows Administrative Tools > Windows Memory Diagnostic. This will check your RAM for any errors.
Start Menu not working
Another common issue with Windows 11 is the Start Menu not working. If you’re having this problem, try the following:
Restart your computer. Sometimes a simple restart can fix the problem.
Run the Start Menu Troubleshooter. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Additional Troubleshooters > Start Menu Troubleshooter.
Reset the Start Menu. Open a Command Prompt as Administrator and type ”Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register ”$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}”. This will reset the Start Menu to its default settings.
Windows Update errors
Windows Update is an essential component of Windows 11, but it’s not without its problems. If you’re experiencing Windows Update errors, try the following:
Restart your computer. Sometimes a restart can fix the problem.
Use the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional Troubleshooters > Windows Update Troubleshooter.
Manually reset the Windows Update components. Open a Command Prompt as Administrator and type ”net stop wuauserv”, ”net stop cryptSvc”, ”net stop bits”, ”net stop msiserver”, ”ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old”, ”ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old”, ”net start wuauserv”, ”net start cryptSvc”, ”net start bits”, and ”net start msiserver”.
Audio problems
Finally, Windows 11 users have reported various audio problems, including sound not working, sound being distorted, or sound cutting out. To fix these issues, try the following:
Check your sound settings. Go to Settings > System > Sound and make sure your output device is set correctly.
Update your audio drivers. Go to Device Manager, right-click on your audio device, and select ”Update Driver”.
Disable audio enhancements. Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Right-click on your audio device > Properties > Enhancements > Check the box next to ”Disable all sound effects”.
Check for audio updates. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
These are the five best known bugs in Windows 11 and how to fix them. While these issues can be frustrating, they can often be resolved with some simple troubleshooting. If you’re still experiencing problems after trying these solutions, you may need to seek further assistance from Microsoft Support or a technical expert.
Small disclaimer
NO, I will not make it a habit to post windows solutions but since I knew all of these and the solutions I thought I’d give it a little attention.
