I generally try not to be political on here, because I believe it’s usually pretty counterproductive but every now and then, you might see one or two posts about my opinions on topics that matter to me, and here’s one of those times. I’ve watched as the world is turning into a populist and right-wing hell, recently (yes America, I’m looking at you) where there are laws being passed that are just the total opposite of my beliefs. Since the US is a big influence on the world, a lot of the focus is on them, but there are many examples around the world, where laws are being passed, that tries to limit the life of people who are not a reflection of the people in power. Even in my own country, Sweden, there are bills being considered to pass into law, to restrict the freedom of citizens.
It’s a well-known fact that those of us that live in some kind of democracy, get the governments we deserve and vote for.
The implementation of new laws that impede the rights and freedoms of marginalized communities considerably affects their everyday life, happiness, and feeling of fitting into society. Such regulations pose a hindrance to their full participation in society and uphold deeply entrenched systemic discrimination and injustice therein.
The laws that are aimed at particular groups, including LGBTQ individuals or people of color, can have a devastating impact on marginalized societies. These laws convey the message that these groups are not given due importance or honor in society. This can cause them to feel excluded and cut off and also lead to a decline of trust in government organizations.
The implementation of such laws can also reinforce preconceptions and prejudices against communities that are already marginalized, aggravating further the discrimination and subjugation they face. A clear example of this is the imposition of restrictions regarding the use of public washrooms by transgender persons, grounded on their gender identity, which sustains and reinforces the prejudicial belief that this population is a danger to society. Consequently, such laws can enhance the likelihood of transgender persons suffering from discriminatory behaviors, violence, or harassment.
Marginalized communities can face devastating repercussions due to recent legislation that limits their access to fundamental human necessities such as medical care or adequate housing. These laws can be especially harmful to women’s health and independence, exemplified by the specific instance of restrictions on abortions or birth control.
Making affordable housing less accessible through laws can worsen the problem of homelessness, especially among marginalized groups such as people of color and LGBTQ individuals.
The impact of these laws on free speech and expression should not be underestimated. Restrictions on protests, in particular, could muzzle underrepresented communities from speaking out against oppression and pushing for change. This would be especially harmful to advocacy movements like Black Lives Matter and the environmental justice cause, which rely on nonviolent demonstrations to bring about progress.
New legislations that curtail the autonomy and liberties of minority groups has a significant bearing on their welfare, feeling of inclusion, and capacity to engage extensively in civilization. They sustain institutionalized bigotry and disparity and transmit a harmful signal that specific communities are not held in high regard or given ample consideration by society.
To ensure a fair and equal society for everyone, it is crucial to comprehend and tackle the negative effects of these laws. It’s time to vote the fascists out of public offices.
