Yep, the playground has gotten a long overdue update and no longer look like it was launched in 1993 (i do love the old design, tho). Part of the reason is this post that I made on LinkedIn a while back but it’s also the fact that I’ve thought about an update for some time now… But I am here to talk about something connected to this, however loosely.
In the last couple of weeks, I’ve been approached several times by self-proclaimed ”SEO experts” offering to help with my online business. Now, I’m all for collaboration, but there’s some glaring issues: their own websites and/or LinkedIn pages are riddled with problems. Think missing elements, placeholder text (yes, “Lorem ipsum” still lurking), and a string of spelling and proofreading errors.
Top this off by trying to convince me by sending me the ”missing parts” as an image of what Google Analytics thinks is missing. No actual research other than what the algo suggested.
If you’re pitching SEO, Content Writing, or other write-heavy web services, here’s why this is bad form:
❌ First Impressions Matter
Your website or LinkedIn page is your business card in the digital world. If the site looks unfinished or careless, it undermines trust in your expertise. Would you trust a hair stylist with unkempt hair? Before you come for me, I’m a writer, not a web designer!! I know my website looks like it’s stuck in 1993. 🤣 (this part is now fixed)
❌ Attention to Detail is Key
SEO is about precision—keywords, optimization, and clear structure. If you can’t take the time to proofread your own materials, it makes me wonder if your SEO tactics will be as careless.
❌ Cold Pitches Without Substance
If you’re reaching out cold to offer services, your LinkedIn and website should demonstrate the value you bring. Missing content or poor design makes it clear you haven’t taken your own business seriously.
Bottom line: If you’re offering to help others succeed online, make sure your own online presence reflects competence and care. Your work should speak for itself, not against you.
